“CULTURE IN CONTEXT, HISTORY IN FOCUS”
Who is Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology?
A stone’s throw from the Duomo, in Palazzo Nonfinito, designed by the court architect Bernardo Buontalenti at the end of the 16th, there is Anthropology and Ethnology.
The Museum was founded in 1869 by the anthropologist Paolo Mantegazza who pursued the intent to collect the testimonies of human diversity: 18 rooms display prestigious and rich ethnographic collections, a document of great importance of the world’s cultures.
Project Overview
The objective of this project was to develop a complete rebranding and redesign for the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology in Florence. The new visual identity aims to reflect the museum’s cultural depth and diversity while offering a contemporary and engaging visitor experience.
Design Approach
The project began with an on-site analysis of the museum’s interior and exterior architecture, leading to the creation of informational graphics that improved spatial orientation within the exhibition.
Next, the focus shifted to the collection itself. Photographic documentation and visual analysis of ancient artifacts — especially from Africa and Asia — informed the visual direction.
Finally, the new identity was developed and implemented, including logo design, color palette, typography, exhibition graphics, and print materials based on research-driven insights.
Solution
The final design provides a culturally respectful, visually compelling identity that bridges tradition and modernity. It enhances the museum’s appeal, particularly for younger and international audiences.
